Sony’s Walkman is 30 years old today.

I remember my first, quite similar to this one. A colleague from my mom’s work offered it to me for my 11th birthday. I went to the neighborhood grocery store to buy some batteries, the cheapest ones. They lasted like 3 hours. I was listening to CHEB KHALED’s third album non stop.

Another souvenir from my Walkman days: I always wanted the ones that had a ‘Record’ function, and a ‘Line In’ plug. I bought like 10 of those, and still have them. I never actually used them but I was in my BLOW OUT’s John Travolta period. To this day, I’m still fascinated by the idea of capturing life on a tape. The process of transforming sound into magnetic particles and fixing it onto a piece of plastic might be the most interesting thing I ever learned in Miss Parisel’s Physics class.

My friend Olivier from FAIRTILIZER told me “Unofficial remixes are the new demo”. And it’s always a pleasure when I hear unsolicited remixes of, say, Signatune or Pocket Piano. Inspiring other people is a great feeling. In that sense, the B.I.G legacy is tremendous, let alone Michael Jackson’s.
